A catalytic combustor is a honeycomb-shaped device coated with precious metals such as platinum or palladium. As smoke passes through it, the combustor causes unburned gases and particles to ignite at a much lower temperature than they normally would. This process creates additional heat, reduces smoke, and lowers emissions.
Catalytic combustors are primarily found in EPA-certified wood stoves and some wood-burning fireplace inserts.
